Bedford is an historic market town and is county town of Bedfordshire. At the last census, the Borough of Bedford had a population of 157,479. The town sits on the River Great Ouse and is only 46 miles from London, 25 miles from Cambridge, 19 miles from Northampton and 17 miles from Milton Keynes. It’s the perfect hub to access lots of local culture but also to experience all the region has to offer.
The history of Bedford
Bedford is a pretty amazing place for history buffs! It has been a market town from the early Middle Ages and the Anglo-Saxon King, Offa of Mercia, who is remembered for building Offa's Dyke on the Welsh border, was buried in 796 in what is now the Church of St Paul. In 1660, John Bunyan was imprisoned for 12 years in Bedford Gaol and it was there that he wrote The Pilgrim's Progress.

Transport in Bedford provides links between the town and other parts of England. Road access to the town is provided by the A6 and A421 roads. The town is served by two railway stations and a network of bus services.
